How to Keep Self Check-In Working in One Afternoon Without Guest Phone Numbers
Airbnb phone masking: Hostaway says last-four door codes still work for its users, but Airbnb tells software users to use its suggested code.

You open your PMS. A new Airbnb booking is there. The name is there. The dates are there.
The phone number is not.
It's not a bug. Smily (BookingSync), a channel manager, says so in plain words: "This is an intentional change made by Airbnb, not a Smily bug or outage."
If your door code goes out by text, this matters this week. Not next month. Here is what changed, what breaks, and how to fix it in one afternoon.
Last updated: October 30, 2026
What changed: Oct 30, 2026: We added a section on whether last-four door codes still work, with what Hostaway says about its own connection and Airbnb's new instruction to software users to use its suggested door code (Help Center article 3764, checked Oct 30, 2026, which still gives no start date).
Oct 28, 2026: We added a section on Skift's report that temporary numbers for software-connected hosts start Oct 30, and what it means for door codes built from a guest's phone number.
Why is my Airbnb guest's phone number missing?
PMS vendors Smoobu and Smily/BookingSync said Airbnb would begin rolling this out the week of Oct 26, 2026. Skift reports a start date of Oct 30 for software-connected hosts (accessed Oct 28, 2026, 6:22 AM ET). Airbnb's help center (article 3764) confirms temporary numbers but hadn't published a date when we checked on Oct 28. More in What changes on Oct 30 below.
Smily's changelog gives the reason as "increased phishing attempts targeting hosts and guests."
You may see other dates. Some vendors list later ones, and Skift now says Oct 30, while Smoobu and Smily said the week of October 26. That is why dates differ. Plan for the earliest one, and have your fixes in place before Friday, Oct 30.
Here is who still gets a number in your software, per Smily and Smoobu:
- The listing is in the United States or Canada.
- The booking was accepted on or after October 26, 2026.
- Host and guest both have a phone number on file.
- Host and guest live in the same country.
Even then, Smoobu says, "it is a temporary number, not the guest's own."
Everyone else? Nothing. Smily says the phone field "will be empty." That includes bookings accepted before October 26, and guests from another country.

How do Airbnb temporary phone numbers work?
Airbnb's Help Center lays out the rules. They are short. Read them twice.
- Numbers are assigned "upon confirmation of a homes reservation."
- You can "call or text (SMS) each other normally."
- "WhatsApp is not supported with these temporary phone numbers."
- "Temporary phone numbers expire two days after checkout."
- Caller ID may show "Airbnb guest" or "Airbnb host."
- Real phone numbers typed into Airbnb messages "will be blocked or replaced with the temporary number, when appropriate."
One more line is easy to miss. Airbnb removed the guest phone number shortcut from quick replies. Its words: "Existing quick replies using these codes will no longer be sent, and templates must be updated."
Read that again if you use quick replies for arrival day. A template with that shortcut just stops sending.
What breaks for self check-in?
Anything that waits for a phone number in your PMS. Make a list. Yours may look like this:
- SMS door codes. No number in the booking, no text goes out.
- WhatsApp bots and welcome messages. Temporary numbers don't work there at all.
- Phone-based check-in. Smart-lock or guest-app flows that match a guest by phone number have nothing to match.
- Automated messages keyed to the phone field. A scheduled SMS with an empty field may fail without telling you.
- Codes built from the phone number in your software. If your PMS made the code from the last digits of the phone field, that field may now be blank or hold a temporary number.
SuperControl's help article tells its hosts to check whether they "use digits from a guest's telephone number for another process, such as an access or door code." Good question. Ask it of your own setup.
The scary part is quiet failure. The guest stands at the door. The text never came. You find out from a 10 PM message.
What changes on Oct 30 for hosts who use software?
Skift reports that starting Oct 30, Airbnb will issue temporary phone numbers to guests and to "large hosts and property managers in the U.S. and Canada" who connect through property management software, and those hosts "will no longer see guests' real phone numbers" (accessed Oct 28, 2026, 6:22 AM ET). Airbnb had not confirmed that date in anything we read as of Oct 28, 2026, 6:22 AM ET; its Help Center article 3764 still gives no date. Earlier, PMS vendors Smoobu and Smily pointed to the week of Oct 26.
Here is what Skift says, all in its Oct 27 report:
- Who: guests and large, "API-connected hosts and property managers."
- Where: it applies "when the host's listing is in the U.S. or Canada, both host and guest reside in those countries, and their phone numbers are registered there."
- Other bookings: "API-connected hosts will be able to find their guests' phone numbers on Airbnb."
- How long: the numbers "work for calls and texts from the time of booking until two days after checkout." After that, calls go to Airbnb support, "which decides whether to share real numbers."
- What doesn't work: "The masked numbers don't support WhatsApp, photo sharing, or group texts."
Skift's summary also says Denver-based Evolve "warned that door codes based on the last four digits of a guest's phone number will no longer work." We could not read Evolve's own help page on this when we checked on Oct 28, so that warning is as Skift reports it.
Airbnb's own page offers a way around it. Help 3764 says: "We'll provide the last 4 digits of the guest's real phone number on the reservation details page." It's under "Suggested door codes," in the overflow menu (checked Oct 28, 2026, 6:22 AM ET). So the digits still exist on Airbnb. What may stop is your software getting them automatically.
Door codes from the last four digits: a quick checklist
- Find out where your code comes from. Check your lock or PMS settings. If the code is built from the guest's phone number, it is at risk.
- Switch the code source if you can. If your lock or PMS supports codes that don't use the phone number, such as a random or reservation-based code, switch to that before Oct 30.
- If you must keep last-four codes, set them by hand. Open each reservation on Airbnb, read the suggested door code in the overflow menu, and set it in your lock app.
- Check that the code reaches the guest. Send it in Airbnb messages, not only by SMS.
What to check in your PMS before Friday
- Open a booking accepted this week. Does the phone field show a number, a temporary number, or nothing?
- List every rule that sends by SMS or WhatsApp, or that builds a lock code from the phone field.
- Look for a help page or notice from your PMS about Airbnb temporary numbers, and follow it over any general advice here.
- Run one test booking end to end and watch the code get set and sent.
Do last-four door codes still work?
It depends on your software, and Airbnb now tells software users to use its own suggested door code. Hostaway says last-four door codes keep working for its users, but Airbnb's Help Center says to use the suggested door code "instead of the last 4 digits of the guest's phone number from your software." Check your own software's support page today.
In an Oct 28, 2026 support article, Hostaway says: "if your door codes use the last 4 digits of the guest's phone number, they keep working. Airbnb sends Hostaway those 4 digits directly." That is Hostaway's description of its own connection, not a statement from Airbnb about every tool.
Airbnb's own Help Center article 3764 (checked Oct 30, 2026) is more cautious. It says: "If you use software to manage your reservations, use the suggested door code instead of the last 4 digits of the guest's phone number from your software." The suggested code is on the reservation details page, in the overflow menu, where Airbnb says it will "provide the last 4 digits of the guest's real phone number." Airbnb also says guests' real phone numbers "are no longer shared with connected software in any country or region," and that for reservations without a temporary number, "Your software won't receive a guest phone number."
Eligibility matters here. Airbnb says the feature "is currently only available for eligible reservations in the United States and Canada including reservations managed by hosts who use property management software connected to Airbnb." Hostaway says that for "all other Airbnb reservations, such as guests from another country, Hostaway receives no phone number."
Hostaway lists two things that do not work for its users:
- WhatsApp. Hostaway says temporary numbers "support only calls and SMS, so WhatsApp messages are not delivered."
- Texts after the stay. Hostaway says "SMS sent more than 48 hours after checkout are not delivered."
Hostaway also says guests with no phone number get no SMS or WhatsApp automations, and it tells hosts to send those messages "through Airbnb messaging or email."
On dates: Airbnb's help page still gives no start date. Skift reports that temporary numbers for software-connected hosts start on Oct 30. Smoobu and Smily said the change began the week of Oct 26, and Hostaway says temporary numbers apply to reservations accepted on or after October 26, 2026, when the listing is in the United States or Canada and the host and guest live in the same country.
Earlier, Skift reported that Evolve warned last-four door codes "will no longer work." Hostaway's article says the opposite for Hostaway users, while Airbnb tells software users to switch to its suggested code. These can all hold at once, because what you get depends on whether your software receives the four digits. Don't assume yours does.
What to do today
- Search your PMS or lock software's help center for "Airbnb temporary phone number" or "door code."
- If it says, as Hostaway does, that Airbnb sends the last four digits, test one booking accepted this week and compare the code your software set with the suggested door code on Airbnb's reservation details page.
- If it says nothing, the codes differ, or the code comes out wrong, do what Airbnb tells software users to do: open the reservation on Airbnb, read the suggested door code in the overflow menu, and set that code in your lock app.
- Move any message that goes out more than 48 hours after checkout, and any WhatsApp message, to Airbnb messaging.
How do I keep self check-in working in one afternoon?
Pick a quiet hour. Open Airbnb, your PMS and your lock app side by side. Then go step by step.
- Find the number on Airbnb. Smily says "Property Managers can still see guest phone numbers in the Airbnb app." For this week's arrivals, check each one there, not in your PMS.
- Put the key instructions in Airbnb messages. Smily's advice: if you use phone numbers for SMS check-in instructions or door codes, "switch to Airbnb messaging and email where possible." Airbnb Messenger works for every booking, number or not.
- Use a lock code that doesn't need a phone number. A lockbox code, or a per-stay smart-lock code your lock app sets on its own. It still works when the phone field is empty.
- Or use Airbnb's suggested door code. Airbnb says it will "provide the last 4 digits of the guest's real phone number on the reservation details page." It's in the overflow menu on that page. Set it by hand; don't count on your PMS to pull it.
- Fix your PMS automations. Find every rule that sends by SMS or WhatsApp, or that builds a code from the phone field. Move the message to Airbnb messaging or email, or give it a fallback.
- Fix your Airbnb quick replies. Remove the guest phone number shortcut from every template. Airbnb says those replies "will no longer be sent" until you do.
- Test with a real booking before the weekend. Take your next arrival. Watch the booking land, the message go out and the code get set. If one piece fails, fix it before Friday.
If you collect numbers through your own online check-in form, read your PMS help page first. Smoobu, for one, says a number from a custom check-in field "does not update the booking's phone field." So an SMS rule tied to that field still won't fire.
And put the code near the top of the message. Guests skim. We wrote about that in Airbnb guests do not read.
What do Airbnb, Booking.com and Expedia now share about guest contact details?
Airbnb isn't alone. Two other big channels changed first. Here is what I could verify today from vendor help pages.
| Channel | What connected software gets now | Since | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Booking.com | No guest phone number. Still in the Extranet and Pulse app | September 28, 2026 | Smoobu, SuperControl |
| Expedia | A number may arrive only in the 14 days before check-in | October 12, 2026 | SuperControl |
| Airbnb | A temporary number in a few US and Canada cases, otherwise none | Week of October 26, 2026 per vendors; October 30, 2026 per Skift (not confirmed by Airbnb as of Oct 28) | Smoobu, Smily/BookingSync, Skift |
Smoobu says Booking.com "no longer sends guests' phone numbers to channel managers such as Smoobu" since September 28. Numbers it already had stay on old bookings.
SuperControl says that from October 12, an Expedia traveller's number "may become available to connected systems during the 14 days before check-in rather than being available throughout the booking journey." So an SMS scheduled earlier than that window could miss.

The pattern is clear. The platform keeps the contact. Your software gets less.
If you list on more than one site, check every channel's flow, not just Airbnb's. Our guide to adding Vrbo or Booking.com without double bookings covers the calendar side.
What I'd remember from this week
- A missing number is a policy change, not a broken PMS.
- The platform's own messages are the one channel that reaches every guest.
- A door code should never depend on a field someone else controls.
- Quiet failures are the worst kind. Test before the guest does.
- Airbnb keeps changing guest rules. This is one more. Our pieces on Airbnb's new house rules and the November 20 guest rules cover the others.
It's annoying. I won't pretend it isn't. You built a system that worked, and someone else changed one field.
But the fix is an afternoon, not a rebuild. Do it before the next arrival. The door is the first thing a guest touches, and a place that is better in person than online still loses that guest if the door won't open.
FAQ
Why is my Airbnb guest's phone number missing?
Airbnb is sharing fewer real guest phone numbers. Its Help Center says "Airbnb may assign temporary phone numbers" once a home reservation is confirmed, and they "expire two days after checkout." PMS vendors Smoobu and Smily first said this began the week of Oct 26, 2026; Skift reported on Oct 27 that it starts Oct 30 for hosts connected through property management software. Airbnb's help center (article 3764) confirms temporary numbers but hasn't published a date. The vendors say it applies to US and Canada bookings where host and guest both have a phone number on file and live in the same country. Look up the guest's number on Airbnb and keep key instructions in Airbnb messages.
When does Airbnb's phone masking start?
Skift reported on Oct 27, 2026 that "starting October 30," Airbnb will issue temporary phone numbers to guests and to large hosts and property managers in the U.S. and Canada who connect through property management software, and those hosts "will no longer see guests' real phone numbers." Airbnb's help center (article 3764) explains temporary numbers but gives no start date. Earlier, PMS vendors Smoobu and Smily said the change began the week of Oct 26 for bookings accepted from that date. Skift's later report gives Oct 30 for software-connected hosts, so plan for the earlier date until Airbnb confirms.
Do last-four door codes still work?
It depends on your software. Hostaway says in an Oct 28, 2026 support article that last-four door codes keep working for its users because "Airbnb sends Hostaway those 4 digits directly." Airbnb's Help Center tells hosts who use software to "use the suggested door code instead of the last 4 digits of the guest's phone number from your software," and says it will "provide the last 4 digits of the guest's real phone number on the reservation details page." Skift reported that Evolve warned these codes "will no longer work." Check your own software's support page, and test one real booking against Airbnb's suggested code.
Can I use WhatsApp with an Airbnb temporary phone number?
No. Airbnb's Help Center says: "WhatsApp is not supported with these temporary phone numbers." You can call or text (SMS) on them, and Airbnb Messenger still works for everything else.
Where can I still see an Airbnb guest's phone number?
In the Airbnb app. Smily's changelog says "Property Managers can still see guest phone numbers in the Airbnb app," and Smoobu's help center says the same. Your PMS may show a temporary number or nothing.
Do Booking.com and Expedia still send guest phone numbers?
Booking.com stopped sending them to channel managers on September 28, 2026, according to Smoobu and SuperControl. SuperControl says that from October 12, 2026, an Expedia number may reach connected systems only during the 14 days before check-in.
